Understanding Your Plumbing

Most people will face plumbing problems at some point. Common issues might be leaking sink faucets or noisy toilets. You may be able to solve the more common problems yourself. You may also find that the work is more cut out for a professional. With a bit more information about which problem you have, you can decide whether you need to call a professional.

Problems You May Encounter

Loud, noisy pipes are a plumbing problem that you might encounter. Noisy pipes often start with a soft noise that may become much louder over time. This is usually caused by water leaking into air chambers, water pressure that is very high or even loose pipes. This may be an issue that you have to consult your professional plumber about.

Another problem that you may find is dripping faucets. The faucet in the sink in your bathroom is different than the faucet in the sink your kitchen. Understanding the type of faucet that you are using is important information for you or your plumber.

You may be able to determine if you have a compression faucet if you have two separate knobs for hot and cold. The washers that are found in compression faucets may get worn with frequent use. You may find that water leaks out of a worn washer. You may find that the worn washer can be easily replace to fix the dripping faucet.

You may find that your faucet is a ball and disc faucet. If you only have on handle for hot and cold water on your sink, then it is likely a ball and disc faucet. Ball and disc faucets usually last longer than compression faucets. An entirely new faucet will need to be put in in the event of a leak with ball and disc faucets. You may want to refer to your local plumber to replace the ball and disc unit.

You may also discover that you have clogged pipes. A pipe that is clogged can lead to a build-up water in your sink or toilet which can eventually overflow. If you look under the sink in your kitchen or bathroom you will see a pipe in the shape of an elbow. A clog can form over time because of the sediments that get trapped in the pipe. If that method still does not clear the clog, you can try to manually remove the gunk by taking the elbow pipe off.

You may discover that to fix the clogged toilet you only need the plunger. If you find that the plunger does not work you can try a plumbing snake as well. If you have tried everything and your toilet is still clogged, consider contacting a professional plumber.

Knowing about common plumbing problems can help you determine the best way to solve them.
